Born May 19, 1949, in Drew, Mississippi, Archibald "Archie" Manning III is a former American football quarterback. He played for the New Orleans Saints, the Houston Oilers, and the Minnesota Vikings. He was the second overall pick in the 1971 NFL Draft and is known for being one of the few quality players on a dreadful team. He was sacked 340 times during his ten years with the Saints, though according to speculation, it should have been more, but he was so well-respected by his team and other players alike that opposing defensive linemen would purposefully go easy on him. The Saints have not issued Manning's #8 jersey since he left the team, and though it has not been officially retired, there is a tacit understanding that no other player will wear it. Another interesting tidbit is that John Grisham is such a fan that he named a character in his novel The Pelican Brief after Manning. Today Manning is a commentator for CBS Sports college football broadcasts, a spokesman for UPS, a member of the College Football Playoff, Postseason Selection Committee, and owns a themed restaurant named Manning's. He is married to college sweetheart Olivia Williams and is father to three football-playing sons: Cooper (who had to retire from the game due to spinal stenosis), Peyton (Denver Broncos starting quarterback), and Eli (New York Giants starting quarterback).
Archie Manning's last name, "Manning," is an Anglo-Saxon name from the Old English personal name meaning "Manning" and the Norse word referring to "valiant man." The name first appeared in Cheshire, where the family held a seat since before 1066. Other spellings include "Maning," and "Mannings." The first known Manning to settle in America was Edmund Manning in New England in 1635.
